What Is Google Penguin And How Will It Affect Your Business?

On April 24, 2012, Google announced a major change for its ubiquitous search engine, Google Search, an update called Google Penguin. It is something that’s been in development for a while, and Google claimed it was a much-needed update aimed at improving their search engine services, which is the company’s biggest and most profitable product, besting even Android and YouTube, the popular video-hosting website.

Since Google introduced its powerful search engine more than a decade ago, the years have seen companies and professional bloggers constantly violating Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, which strictly prohibit the use of spam and malicious techniques known as black-hat SEO. Creation of duplicate content, malicious link schemes, cloaking and keyword stuffing are only a few examples of black-hat SEO.

Now with the Penguin update, Google hopes to extinguish these downright illegal methods used by skilled webmasters to increase their website’s page ranking. This is crucial in ensuring that relevant hits stay on top of the list and on the first page of Google’s search results.

Why Penguin?

Fact is the algorithm update came first; the name came later. Two days later, to be specific. When the update went live, a popular online magazine conducted a survey of its readers on what they think the name of the update should be. Several rather humorous suggestions popped up, including “OOPS”, “Pi” and “Shark Update”.

However, nothing seemed to stick. Then Google made an announcement that it was naming the latest update Penguin and Todd Bailey, SEO expert, agreed by likening the penguin’s life cycle to the algorithm and its sense of smell to its ability to detect spam.

According to Google, the update is expected to affect an estimated 3.1% of English search queries and 3% of queries in other languages including Arabic, Chinese and German, among others. The Penguin penalty is that websites that do not follow Google’s Webmaster Guidelines are expected to fall in rankings as soon as the update takes effect. Websites such as Doc-txt.com and Similarsites.com both experienced traffic loss of up to 70% as per Penguin.
